Japanese aircraft carriers bomb Shanghai (the first terror bombing of a civilian population) from January 29 to March 3 in retaliation for anti-Japanese protests and actions. Tsien was studying railroad engineering at Jiaotong University where many students had participated in rallies.The Japanese had 2,000 airplanes as compared to the 90 that the Chinese had in safe flying condition.
